Wolves Soccer Heads to First IHSAA Sectionals

Providence Cristo Rey High School will celebrate a big milestone on October 2nd. On that day, the school will make its first Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) sectional appearance.

Providence Cristo Rey High School joined the IHSAA in 2013. All new schools must wait out a four year probation period before participating in tournaments.

The Wolves will begin their IHSAA sectional play with the first match of the Boys Soccer Sectional 43 Tournament. They will be playing Thomas Carr Howe Community High School.

Now in her fourth year as head coach, Brittany Leerkamp feels ready for this new challenge. "I am very excited heading into our first ever sectionals. The seniors this year were freshmen when I started coaching here, so it has been quite a journey preparing them along the way to step up our level of intensity and play and raise the expectation. We’re ready and we’re pumped!"

Senior Chris Valdez is eagerly anticipating their sectional debut. "This will be the first chance our team will have to win something big for the school. I just get chills thinking about winning that first game and moving on to the next round. If we win that first one, I am really going to want to win the whole sectional."

Sophomore Brian Adame came to most of team's summer workouts because he knew this season would be an important one. "I like the sport, and I want to keep getting better at it."

He also wanted to thank his coach for her hard work too. "Coach Leerkamp does a lot for us. She is a great coach."

The Wolves are co-ed team that will be competing in a boys' sectional. Junior Alexys Taylor is the team's goalie, and one of the three female PCR players.

When asked how she feels about being in a boy's sectional, she said, "To me, it isn't such a huge deal because I've been competing against mostly all boys teams for the last two seasons. I know I've been working hard and can help my team. I can't wait for Monday."
