Providence Cristo Rey Competes in First Wrestling Meet

Providence Cristo Rey High School has added varsity wrestling to its winter sport options.

Coaches Dale Illingworth and Adam Harder have both been wrestling since age four. Coach Illingworth has been leading youth wrestling teams for the last twelve years, and is the father of a PCRHS sophomore. His son, Hunter, has been wrestling since age four.

"I asked Principal Dinkins if we could add wrestling last year. High school sports keep kids grounded, active, and healthy. I like this school and I am excited to add some programs to get more kids involved." says Coach Illingworth on his decision to coach the varsity team.

"This is season will be a learning experience for most of the new guys. It's all about accepting outcomes and moving forward at this point. This is a good group of dedicated guys, and I am excited to see them compete," says Coach Illingworth.

For their first meet, the Wolves faced off against the George Washington High School Continentals.

Seniors Gustavo Adame and Peniel Adjahouisso both won exhibition matches. Hunter Illingworth won the school's first official match. All won by pins.

Adame has wrestled at a previous school and is excited to get back on the mat. "I have been dying to get back out there. I asked Principal Dinkins and Mr. Dishman (the school's athletic director) if we could add it, so I am glad they made that happen."

The coaches and team were pleased with the outcome of their first appearance. "Seeing them accomplish goals is the main thing. We are starting from scratch, so we are ready to start showing people what we can do," said Coach Illingworth.
